Turners Falls, MA—One of the most pressing challenges facing a new elementary teacher is effective classroom management. Even experienced teachers changing grades face challenges adjusting their teaching to the different developmental needs of their new students.
The newly completed 6-volume series, What Every Teacher Needs to Know About Setting Up and Running a Classroom K–5, helps new teachers and grade changers meet those challenges with books for kindergarten through fifth grade. Each clear, concise handbook combines the supportive voice of an experienced teacher with many real-life examples. The authors coach readers through organizing the classroom space, establishing a schedule, teaching daily routines, building community, doing field trips and special projects, and communicating with parents.
Series authors Margaret Berry Wilson (K–2) and Mike Anderson (3–5) are professional development specialists with Northeast Foundation for Children, originator of the Responsive Classroom approach to elementary teaching. In 2004, Anderson received the Milken Educator Award for excellence in teaching. Both authors taught the grades they wrote about for fifteen years.
In a recent interview, Wilson said, “When I started teaching, it seemed as if other teachers knew all this ‘secret stuff.’ I wanted to reveal some of that wisdom so beginning teachers or grade changers could use it right away.”
Anderson added, “We’re giving really practical advice about fundamental things, like how you get the attention of a group and set things up so that students can get materials quickly and safely. It’s hard to teach anything without knowing how to do those sorts of things, but they’re often not covered in teacher training.”
Each volume in the What Every Teacher Needs to Know K–5 Series is priced at $19. The entire set can be purchased for $95.
